Tripura Now Targets September for Its Own Tea Auction Centre

A delegation from the Tripura Tea Development Corporation studied the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre's operations on August 8, with officials now targeting an end-of-September launch for Tripura's own centre in Agartala.
That date is earlier than the guidance on record. This publication reported on July 11 that TTDC had signed Rs 726 crore (roughly $87 million) in investment MoUs at a state business conclave alongside plans for the Agartala centre, with officials at the time putting the launch in the following year.
The delegation was led by TTDC chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh and managing director Er. Rajesh Kumar Das (IAS), with Tea Board India executive director Arunita Phukan also taking part.
GTAC secretary Priyanuz Dutta walked the group through the full operational chain: tea arrival and cataloguing, quality assessment, electronic auctioning, buyer participation, logistics and settlement.
Officials said modern electronic auction systems "can strengthen the tea value chain by improving transparency, enabling better price realisation for growers and expanding market opportunities."
Tripura ranks sixth among India's tea-producing states, with roughly 9 million kilograms (about 9,900 US tons) a year. More than 60% of that crop sells at auction outside the state, chiefly through Guwahati and Kolkata, and Agartala would become the second e-auction centre in Northeast India after Assam's, according to a December 2025 report.
The launch date has moved before: guidance in late 2024 pointed to sometime in 2025, and this publication's own account in July put it a year further out.
